The grandfather of all modern steam locomotives, The Rocket was the first steam locomotive that demonstrated the practical use of such an engine. The locomotive won the famous Rainhill Trials proving the design superior to others of the day. The basic principles of the design were used in all steam locomotives including modern 20th century designs until they were eventually replaced by diesels.
