street dharma: haiku

Acrylic on canvas, with oil pastel, sharpies, dripped crayon, stencils, handmade stamp. Inspired by spring in the city... walking down the sidewalk, with trees full of blossoms. made me think of haikus, which are tradionally about nature, trying to convey a certain moment in time. the figure in the lower right is Bassho, the most famous of the Zen poets. the text in blue, not attributed to anyone specific, is "new leaves, on a tree, thought dead" and a poem, in black, that became more background is "everything, just as it is, as it is, as, Flowers in bloom, Nothing to add"... no words refers to many zen masters, when asked what zen was, saying words could not convey it. 20 inches square. Completed June 21, 2006. copyright jeff ostrowski. Enjoy!!
