The overall message is one of communion with the feminine self, as well as the Divine -- self discovery. THE BEAR ~ Wisdom, Strength, Endurance, Survival, Regeneration of Powers ~ The bear abounds in symbolism throughout the ages. Often representing the Primordial Mother energy because of the bears habit of travelling into the womb of the earth for hibernation and its fierce protection of its offspring. A popular animal totem reference book states the bear as an alchemical symbol for the nigredo of prime matter, Prima Materia. [Please note that the raven or crow is actually the symbol for nigredo] This, I believe, is intended as a reflection of mans early connection to bear and the process of death and rebirth represented by passing through caves. Bear skulls found in caves are some of the earliest ritual artifacts of mankind.
