The Sphinx Glacier in Garibaldi Provincial Park, British Columbia, is probably the glacier I have seen the most number of times in my life. I first took in its grand view from across Garibaldi Lake in 1988 when a friend and I made the 9-k hike up. I have since visited the lake at least a dozen times and the view never fails to impress me. This photo was taken on the evening before the photo of Garibaldi Lake in the digital photo gallery. I used a telephoto lens to isolate the detail of the ice as it caught the light of the setting sun. Since 1928, the glacier has receeded almost three kilometres back from the lake shore. Whether or not man is responsible for this warming trend is becoming less and less disputable as ice core studies in Antarctica show that the atmosphere has the highest levels of CO2 in the last 300 thousand years. That the glaciers are shrinking is a sad fact. But there is always hope for them. The earth is in an interglacial period that will end eventually and the next ice age will come.
