In 1955 Chevrolet broke a 38 year old tradition with the introduction of an optional 265 cid V-8 engine. It was a giant step forward in the performance market. No longer would the word "Chevy" bring hoots of "Six in a row don't go!" The combination of the new engine and the Bel Air's styling became immortal.
