The original vision for aquarium came whilst I was in Venice during Xmas 2004 inspired by the architecture and crowds. I then added a few details from an abandoned plan called neurotic vanity to fill out the piece. Due to the delay between planning and execution the finished version had little in common with the initial plan. I aimed for a style and mood in between Mattas The Disasters of Mysticism and the art collective Rockgroup but in the end it came out nothing like either. The text is a quote from the Indonesian writer Y.B. Mangunwijaya "You might not see things yet on the surface, but underground, it's already on fire" which I thought fitted the piece quite well. The message/meaning of the art on the whole is open to interpretation due to the final version straying so much from the plan. I am fairly satisfied with the outcome apart from the jelly-fish being too dark in both the scan and -to some extent- the original due to an unneccessarily (in hindsight) black underlayer.
