U.S.S. Stagbush

This was a commissioned piece for my father-in-law Benjamin Barker Mason who served aboard the U.S.S. Stagbush minesweeper during WWII. Being unfamiliar with ships, this was a challenge for me. It was given to him for his 80th birthday.

I'd like to imagine that one of the crew members was my mother's brother, Enoch Steadman, who grew up on Block Island, Rhode Island. I can still remember his telling the story of how they survived a hurricane off North Carolina.

i also believe that my father, Morton "Mort" Foster (also deceased), served opn the Stagbush from commissioning thru Tokyo when he had to return due to a family medical emergency. I believe that my sister now has the same photograph at the Golden Gate. I understand that it went thru "Halsey's Typhoon" before arrival in Japan.

My father William Kale (now deceased) also served on the Stagbush. The image looks similar to a photo I have of the ship passing under Golden Gate Bridge with some weather damage on the starboard bow. I like the natural setting as if at anchor at a South Pacific island.
