Trinity

Trinity oil, 18 by 24 inches, on stretched canvas, was finished January 8, 2004. It is the third painting in my series titled Unforgettable. My subjects are the iconic Mitten Rocks of Monument Valley, just south and west of Shiprock, New Mexico, near the Arizona border, and a lone Juniper tree among the high desert sage. Over the last 50 million years or so, forces of wind and water have cut into, and peeled away, the surface of the Colorado Plateau to reveal these natural wonders, about a mile apart and almost 1000 feet tall. Geologists view these formations as wonders of the world, clearly stratified in three main layers, with Organ Rock shale at the base, De Chelly sandstone in the middle, and Moenkopi shale towards the summit. The vivid red color derives from iron oxide, while the darker, blue-grey rocks get their color from manganese oxide. The Navajo go a step further and view these formations as sacred, which brings to mind what the Apostle Paul wrote almost two thousand years ago. Since the creation of the world, Gods invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made. When I look at this scene, I cant help but see God in the center, my Rock of Ages. Seated at the right hand of the Father, is the Son, and the Juniper tree represents growth and the Holy Spirit. Together, they are the Trinity. © 2004 John Watt artist retains all rights to any reproductions of this original art.
