Woman at the Well

20 x 30 inch oil on stretched canvas. It is the second painting in my series titled Unforgettable. The title was suggested by a gospel story in the fourth chapter of the book of John. In it, Jesus took a shortcut, from Judea to Galilee, where he met a woman at a well. Wells back then, as in the painting, were located outside the villages along the main roads. To paraphrase, the woman came to the well regularly, and Jesus gave her a remarkable message about water that would quench her thirst forever. He also told her that a time was coming, that would change forever the way she lived. Although the well in the painting still exists today, much the same as it did when this scene occured, it is doubtful one would happen on a woman doing her laundry on a rock while her horses stand by, especially dressed in her traditional velveteen and satin. Today, it is much more likely one would see a couple of Navajos slaking their thirst, with an Escalade and a pick-up truck parked near by. The running water that many on the reservation enjoy today is hardly the living water mentioned in the Gospel but the times that have come since this scene took place have certainly changed life for the Diné forever. © John Watt, artist retains all rights to any reproduction of this original art.

Not only are the figures well painted, but you have captured the look and feel of the Navajo habitat, too.
