Cottonmouth.

This is a Water Mocassin. It is a beautiful snake. I was about six inches from its backside before I saw it. I quickly backed off. I think it is the closest I have ever been to one. It was hard to get a picture because I was shaking. I was going to get a picture of a Cowhorn Orchid in the early morning hours today. I always look where I am walking in this area because I have seen up to 7 of these snakes in less than an hour on other days. It just blended in so well. The first image is at ISO 1600 and 300mm. It was taken handheld. The second image was with a 50mm prime at ISO 200. Not a lot of difference in image quality. I would have liked to use a tripod but the hike into this swampy area does not lend its self to carrying one. I will try to get to the Cowhorn Orchid tomorrow.

Maybe you should keep some antivenom on hand for these hikes. Liz
