Oil om canvas. 50 x 70cm. Studio painting based on on-site oil and pastel studies and depicts the Rychenbach in the Valley of Rosenlaui, Bernese Obserland. The Wellhorn looms majestically in the background. Rosenlaui was a favourite destination for rich 19th and 20th century tourists doing the "Grand Tour" of Switzerland. This river plunges some 6 km further down the valley into the Riechenbach falls where Conan Doyle's hero, Sherlock Holmes and his arch enemy Dr. Moriaty, plunged to their deaths locked in mortal combat. Tourists still pilgrim to the Sherlock Holmes Museum in the town of Meiringen at the foot of the falls.
