This painting features three Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawks flying above the US Navy dirigible, USS Macon off the coast of California in the 1930's. The USS Macon served as a flying aircraft carrier where the Curtiss Sparrowhawk biplanes could be launched and landed on. It and the Sparrowhawks had a short lifespan. The USS Macon crashed off the coast of California in 1935. The Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk is a light 1930s biplane fighter aircraft that was carried by the United States Navy airships USS Akron and Macon. It is an example of a parasite fighter, a small airplane designed to be deployed from a larger aircraft such as an airship or bomber. Only one intact Sparrowhawk survives today. It is at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. The concept for this painting started in the late 1990's and early 2000 when I first built a paper model of the USS Macon. Later, I found a plastic model of the Sparrowhawk plane. The company who made it, Williams Brothers, is out of business. From the time I first applied the idea to canvas in April of 2022, I changed my plans many times. When recreating a concept scene which depicts history, it is very common to continuously scrap a previous idea.
