This is my third pastel portrait of the legendary first television artist, Jon Gnagy, who I had the privilege of seeing twice when I was a youngster. I chose to do a portrait of Gnagy standing in front of a mining structure scene from his color landscape book. It was and still is my favorite Jon Gnagy lesson. It features a tall gold mine operation's building, high in the mountains of the pacific northwest. Gnagy never mentioned the location of this mining building , and I have often wondered if it was real or imagined. There are still mining towns in existence and scattered all over the United States. Gnagy could have been inspired by any number of them. Perhaps, Gnagy was inspired by the Hemet Belle Mine above Garner Valley, CA near Idyllwild, CA where Gnagy lived for over 20 years.
