Sweping up the hold

Skippers who used the skipper's exchange, never knew in advance what their next load would be. If a ship had just unloaded a cargo of, for example, bricks or scrap, but then, in order not to lie idle, had no choice but to accept a cargo of general cargo or food products, it was obliged to thoroughly clean, dry and ventilate the hold. The watercolor shows a clipper with this job done. In addition, a small flat-bottomed boat that probably brought agricultural products from the local farmers to the market. Scene from the 1920s.
