Bamboo

One of The Four Gentlemen, and a member of the Three Friends of Winter, bamboo is is both the most important and most practiced subject in Chinese Brush Painting. It is considered to be written not painted as the brushstrokes come from the "higher" art of Chinese Calligraphy. Here the artist brushwork is exposed and evaulated stroke by stroke, for execution, strength, grace, nuiance of the brush, and correct calligraphic technique. For Chinese Brush Painting is evaulated in two ways - the chi of the overall composistion and the all important space, as well as each individual brushstroke and its rhythmic vitality. Someday I hope to achieve at least one "masterful" bamboo painting. Chinese Brush Painting with Ink on Mulberry Paper. Original 19" x 29 1/2 ". Copyright 1992-2005. Wendy De Rycke.
