Haecceity

Digital Painting [version 4] (2020) This piece is a vague representation of our reflection and how we view ourselves as people, haecceity being the property of being a unique and individual thing (or person); it also holds some ground as a physical manifestation of the soul, materializing itself as a light form present in the eyes, which are well-known as 'windows to the soul', characterising surrealism gives an ethereal effect and sporadic muted colours enhance the axonometric perception and brighten the appearance of the spiritual glimmer by contrast. Though when representing the soul one must conclude that humanity is not pure and every soul bears a stain, here exemplified by the "blood" flowing - yet we don't let the tarnish of life overtake and dishearten our existence, thus a ghost of a smile tugs at her lips; she isn't melancholic nor emboldened, only percipient, thoughtful and patient. A sort of quiet optimism that soothes the mind and body. However, the passionate, explosive, volatile side of humanity is also exposed in her intense gaze, as said by Kehinde Wiley, "Portraits are about revealing the aspects of an individual", yet in this case, I use a portrait to embody all of humanity and those who relate to my vision. The work employs allegories ubiquitous of the renaissance period but synergistically allows the pursuit of contemporary aesthetics epitomised as various ornate paraphernalia, exhibiting a decidedly antithetical and unconventional synchronisation between elements of the composition.
