The Canal du Midi

The channel connects the Garonne with the Etang de Thau on the Mediterranean and was one of the largest structures of the 17th century. Construction started in 1666 under the leadership of Pierre-Paul Riquet and lasted until 1681. The the intention was a connection between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean. The main challenges was transferring water of the Montagne Noire to the Seuil de Naurouze, the highest point of the channel. Today the channel is no longer in use for commercial shipping but all the more so for pleasure craft. To stabilize the banks, the cuffs largely lined with plane trees, which gives the channel its unique atmosphere. Together with the old villages and historic towns in the immediate vicinity it is one unique tourist attraction especially visited with a rental boat but also along the towpath by bicycle. Also the channel is a favorite spot were boat owners like to hibernate, especially Dutch and English.

ahh... the tourists. Yes... I'll bet the local folks look forward to this time of peace and quiet. I can see why the tourists are drawn though... lovely place.

Artist Reply: Indeed Jim, while making this watercolor I had the French version by Gilbert Becaud in mind of Neil Diamonds song "September Mornings", which completely describes the atmosphere an the relive after a busy touristic saison.
