Subject matter, color, and form are important in creating an effective realistic painting, but often it is a unique perspective that entices viewers to study the piece more carefully, more slowly, and perhaps to more fully appreciate the image. I hope this is the case with this color pencil painting entitled "Merging Light and Shadow". While visiting with others attending a recent birthday celebration, my attention was diverted from our conversation when I realized we were standing under an amazing display of light. Photographs of the display taken that evening from several angles later revealed to me that not all perspectives are equally dynamic. This color pencil painting is based on one of my several photographs. The piece was done on Grafix drafting film using Farber-Castell Polychromos pencils. The size of the artwork is 18 X 12 inches.

Artist Reply: Marie-Claire: Thank you so much for your very kind words. I'm glad that you like this piece, as it is also one that I feel is just what I was trying to render. We are having really, really cold weather here now. They are calling it a Polar Vortex coming through the mid-west. Hope that you guys are warm or at least warmer than we have here and that you are doing well. Best regards, Will
