As a teacher, Dr Joseph Bell (39yrs old) left a strong impression upon a 17 yr old student, Arthur Doyle, at the medical school of Edinburgh University & inspired the character traits of Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle described Dr Bell as a thin dark man with a high-nosed face, penetrating eyes, & angular shoulders who sat in his receiving room with a face like an Indian & diagnosed people as they came in before they even opened their mouths. He hardly ever made a mistake while telling them the details of their past life.
