Shropshire Beau

The painting depicts the events of the night of 25thApril 1942 when Bristol Beaufighter VIF X7933 of No. 255 Squadron based at High Ercall, intercepted and shot down a Junkers Ju88A-6 of IV Gruppe, 12 Staffel KG3. The bomber was trying to escape up the Wye Valley having dropped its bombs on the city of Bath. Pilot F/O Wyrill with radar operator Sgt Willins were on a practice interception sortie when it was vectored on to the German aircraft. F/O Wyrill reduced speed from 230 mph to 160 mph and shortly afterwards saw the glow of exhausts which was typical of a Ju 88 or He 111. A two second burst from 100 yards astern scored hits causing the Ju 88 to take evading action and disappear in the mist. Sgt Willins maintained radar contact and visual contact was re-established. A four second burst was given from the same position as before, closing to 50 yards, when the enemy aircraft burst into a mass of flames and went down vertically. Two of the four crew escaped by parachute before a brilliant flash on the ground showed where the aircraft had exploded, it crashed into the side of Gwaunceste Hill near Builth Wells, Brecon.
