On his way home Perseus encounters a beautiful woman named Andromeda chained to some rocks. She is to be sacrificed to a sea monster, however Perseus saves her. In displaying the figures between pillars the artist is expressing suppression and captivity. Andromeda is painted in a lighter shade as a means of depicting hope.
