Just off I-80 west of Lake Tahoe is this memorial to the Donner Party of 1846-47, whose fate has become legend. The Internet of course has a ton of information about this ill-fated (an understatement) group of pioneers. One of the best places to start is by viewing Ric Burns' excellent documentary, "The Donner Party", in the PBS American Experience series. It's online. Google it and ye shall find.
