"Wilson River Dawn" oil painting c.2011, by Marcia L. Wilson. One of the quietest recent times in Oregon's historic Tillamook Burn forest. The inferno most noted for its disastrous economic consequences [ecological damage had yet to be recognized by many in that era] preceded a series of conflagrations after 1933 that took out billions of board feet of gigantic old-growth timber. Fortunately, school children and adults volunteered to replant the charred acres. Today the regenerated forests and their wildlife denizens owe their health to their local benefactors, many of whom still recall their days of service to the communities.
