St. Bernardine's Catholic Church in San Bernardino. Location: 531 N F St, San Bernardino, CA 92410 History : St. Bernardine, established in 1862, is the founding parish of the Catholic community of San Bernardino. Through the years it has been distinguished in the city by its architectural presence as well as by the passionate faith of its members. The only parish in San Bernardino for some 60 years, the church has many families with ancestors who were its pioneers. Before the establishment of the Diocese of San Bernardino, the Parish belonged variously to the Diocese of Monterey, Los Angeles and San Diego. Through these years, St. Bernardine Parish was pivotal to Catholic life in the area, carrying memories of outstanding generations of members and pastors, including Msgrs. Daniel Ryan and John J. Bradley. Stories are told of the Civil War days, of the fires that destroyed two earlier churches and the glory of building the present church in 1910. A memorial was posted on the street in front of the church ( I don't know if it is still there) in the shape of an arrowhead that read, " Attack by Confederates - Half built walls of a church here served as refuge in civil war" The Arrowhead Location: It can be seen from many areas of the city of San Bernardino. To get closer to it, you can travel the highway of HWY 18 near the Arrowhead Springs Hotel. History: There are many legends about its origin related to the Indian tribes who lived in the area. There are also scientific explanations for its origin. Finally, the saint for whom the city is named after - St. Bernardine of Sienna, Italy. History: He lived from 1380-1444. St. Bernardine of Siena belonged to the Franciscan Order , specifically the "Observant" branch of the Friars Minor, which emphasized a stricter adherence to the rules of St. Francis Besides his preaching, he was known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, which was previously associated with John of Vercelli and the Dominican order, Bernardino devised a symbol—IHS—the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek, in Gothic letters on a blazing sun.
