Pope Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto June 2, 1835. As pope he was head of the Catholic Church from August 4, 1903 until his death, August 20, 1914. Pius X is known for vigorously opposing modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine, and for promoting liturgical reforms and Thomist scholastic theology.
