I’ve been around chickens all my life and I love them dearly. Despite that, most of our hens aren’t exactly named except for those with unique features or personalities. This Rhode Island Red hen isn’t named, but she’s recognized as the busy body. She’s a tall, lean hen with an upfront attitude. Although not aggressive, she’s the first hen to follow anyone around the chicken yard. She stays at your heels and vocalizes loudly, seeming possessive of the territory without any pecking. Being tall, she’s a quick runner and ends up taking the best treats from other, slower hens. We’ve recognized her amongst her similarly colored sisters by the tuft of down on her chest that always stands out. Her second tell is her demeanor – you can’t beat that uppity gaze of hers. “Miss Rhode Island” 8x10” acrylic on wood. © Cara Bevan 2009
