Awesome painting! I like everything about it, but I donĀ“t know if I can express it so well in words. I will give it a try, anyway, and start with the surface, that is; the coloristics of the painting: The light, shimmering purple haze, that permeats everything in the pic, gives a harmonious (among other sentiments) feel to the eventide (?) depicted in this painting and the treshold (of the title) seems to be part of a mysterious ruined building that may symbolize many things of different natures. If I may ponder upon the title of the painting, my first point would be to "point" out that it is a lady who is standing at the treshold, but the treshold of what? Wilderness or civilization (which seems to be in a pretty "ruined" condition, being a ruin and all...)? Or should one interpret the painting more symbolically and add the time-factor also - kind of like times past (the ruin) versus future times (the unknown wilderness)? If I digress further in the same vein I would point out the statues (one holding a shield and a spear in the left part of the pic and the other being an equestrian in the right part of the pic, illumined by a soft crescent) - they seem to be connected to the symbolic meaning (if there is one) of this painting. Could it be so "simple" that the statues could represent, say; the ex-lover/boyfriend and the future lover/boyfriend-to-be of the lady? I am at a loss trying to "decipher" this great pic, which tantalizes my imagination, so; my final question will be this: May I ask what your original thought was behind the subtle, but yet poignant symbolism of this excellent painting?
