GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER

I was so enthralled with the HBO Series "Deadwood," it so inspired me to pick up the "pencil" to do this portrait of Custer. First of all, I am not a fan of this man, but isn't he posed for a wicked look or what? This "pencil" was drawn using a photograph for reference taken by photographer, Matthew Brady.

The original is 8.5" x 10.75" overall. It is drawn on medium weight, hot press Crescent Illustration Board. German made Faber-Castell Drawing Pencils were used. The majority of the "pencil' was done with a #4 lead, while the remainder was darkened with a #6 and #8 leads. Total time to complete was 10 hours.

I've heard Custer liked eating peyote buttons before indian raids.Do you know if it's true?Might explain why he thought he could beat so many in one swoop.

Beautiful, Den! Besides 3D Illustration, I also like doing miniature military figure painting. For this hobby I use refence books from the Men At Arms series by Osprey publishers; This wonderfull illustration reminds me on the many old sepia black+white photographs that are in these books! GREAT! Rob

excellent work denny! you've gone beyond the pale art that photography was when this man had his picture taken - you've got genuine feel in all the fabrics and materials within your picture. as i said in the message area too you've captured a bit of the madness of this man that lay hiding beneath the surface of his "legend". i especially like that you've included a closeup for us here! excellent !

Looks lot like a real photo copy!
