The Marshall Toothpick Factory Harbor Springs, MI

This is a part of an old and bygone historical era of Harbor Springs Michigan. The Marshall Toothpick Factory was responsible for shipping 98% of all toothpicks that were used in Japan at the dawn of the 20th Century. This was the Harbor Springs waterfront in 1897. The factory was located on W. Bay St. where the Wallstrom Marina is today. Harbor Springs became a favorite summer retreat for the wealthy industrialists of the Great Lakes region. The Proctors and Weyerhausers along with the Fishers and the Dodge Brothers had their summer homes on a small peninsula that is just to the to the west of where the factory stood. Harbor Springs and the Little Traverse BAy area has become to the Great Lakes what Carmel and Big Sur are to the West Coast. There are first rate Restaurants Hotels and golf courses around the area as well as marvelous facililities for winter sports.

I have a rare original Stanton Manolakas that has no prints on the market, it is dated 1986 and titled "City of Peking, New York". I contacted Stanton just prior to his passing and asked him if he minded authenticaing i for me. He responded by explaining it was one of his earlier works and was sold at an art gallery in Los Angeles immediately to pay bills. He believed he had sold it for $5,000.00 at the time which matched the figure of the man who gifted me to piece saying his father had bought it for $5k and it hung in his office ever since his passing. I knew I had a fine art original in my possession just by looking at it. So when I spoke with Stanton he asked me if he could send someone out to take a special photo of it so he could have prints made to sell. Then something odd happened... someone had returned home and his demeanor switched to that of a frightend child who had been caught or in trouble for something? I had asked why I should consider allowing prints to exist of an original, would that not decrease it's value for potential sale? And the I never heard from or received and more reply's to my emails since. So, I am wondering who showed up and was Stanton already deceased? Was someone, a relative perhaps, a friend of the family, trying to get me to allow a total stranger to come collect and original unkown piece without offering a receipt or bond, etc, to just hand it over to? I don't know...But I can tell you the artwork is for sale if anyone is interested, Just leave a note here and i will check back everyday for the next week or so, Artist: STANTON MANOLAKASTitle: CITY OF PEKING NEW YORKSize: 30”W X 23”HMedium: WATERCOLORDate: 1986Frame: ORIGINAL (BURLWOOD) 37.5”W X 30”HCondition: EXCELLENTAcquisition details: GIFTED TO ME BY THE SON OF ORIGINAL BUYER
