Bruce Combs 27 Jun 2009

Dear Artist Anneke, I am most humbly touched that you, an artist whose paintings prove John Keats' line in "ODE TO A GRECIAN URN" that: "Beauty is Truth --Truth Beauty" Yes, I am deeply touched, Anneke, that you would accept my suggestion to reconsider your original title to this wonderful painting. (I hope that you do not receive too many complaints here for doing that!). I am also as grateful for your kind words below "AUTUMN ODE!" May you long and often continue to translate your precious visions and inspirations into such paintings and to share them with us as they become a part of the physical universe. And as well, may each one of them infinitely continue to confirm a second statement from a Keats poem: “A THING OF BEAUTY IS A JOY FOREVER!” Although the title is revised, thankfully the painting remains the same, as does my earlier lengthy comment still printed here below. I think immodestly that its discussion of the meritorious structure of this merely-simple-seeming painting may perhaps enhance some viewers' experience in viewing and thinking more about it, even, or especially, should that viewer disagree. And I certainly do welcome any (cultured!) responses anyone may have, pro or con! Thank you. Peace, etc., Bruce Combs. ====================================== My Dear and Respected Anneke, I have forgotten what I said my last time visiting your gallery about this lovely painting that you have titled simply, FALL DOODLING! But right now I am just sitting here in awe -- So many of them! These masterful paintings -- but today this one especially caught me. What a lovely collection of harmonious pastel colors in this tranquil garden of peace surrounding the entrance to the pretty forest path! Come in among these pleasant trees, I seem to feel a voice beckoning to me. Come. Enjoy a quiet stroll or sit relaxing, maybe with a book (probably poetry), and if you've come alone, dream of your love, whomever, wherever your love, past, present, or future may be – and may your reverie of love be as lovely as this place, its solitude; its sanctuary. this painting that the title suggests was merely a mindless time passer, probably a lesser multitask! Ah, but this place itself could never really be, I fear. Only an inspired masterfully talented painter could create it! And from such a few delicately blended hues -- maybe three? -- alas my eyesight's not so good now (but how could better eyes admire it more?) An invitation from the far reaching depth of the path among these gentle woods. Could that be someone standing at the distant end of the path? From their height at our right the tops of trees diminish toward our left, even though -- trick of the eyes! -- one or more of them stands in behind along the forest path, leading us off to the left along this water, still as a canal, although not smooth, nor deep and dark, nor straight; as if it were assigned by nature just to rest here, and placidly reflect the placid sky. And just for us, today, as we pause here, taking in, enthralled, rejuvenated by, and maybe even understanding now the joy that only God can send to nature, who now shares its partaking of that joy with us as well as in its inspiration to the painting’s maker. And so we are here, standing on the little shore opposite to the path’s entrance, entranced, to be at the very spot where the painter must have sat, or stood with her easel. Surely, almost in a trance of inspiration herself, Anneke must have conceived and recreated for herself, and for us, and for all the universe, this beauty, as young Keats said, “A Joy Forever.” And so, dear artist, Anneke, please do consider changing the name of this glorious painting. No one would deny that its definitely God-given angelic delicacy creates a wonderful, awesomely powerful simplicity. Thus, listening to a fugue by Bach (and I have no hesitancy in making this comparison!), one might experience such an apparently simple “intense fragility” (my gratitude to poet e e cummings!). A deeper investigation of the structure reveals, however, an actually understated (less is more!), carefully created complexity that quite successfully remains obscured. I am left with no doubt whatsoever that this masterful achievement definitely involved the inspiration of an already tremendously talented and skillful artist. We are blessed, indeed, to have Anneke among us. But this painting, as do all of her posted works, absolutely transcends anybody’s “Doodling!”

Artist Reply: Bruce, my dear friend, thank you so very much for these lovely words. They sound like a poem too. I'm truly honoured that you think of Keats' Ode when looking at my painting. I think every artist dreams of such exquisite comments to their work, they are like presents. It shows your sweet personality that you give them so generously.
