The largest flower native to Britain, which flowers June to August. The water lily has fleshy underwater stems that can reach upto 6ft below the surface. The flowers don't open until mid morning and start to close (like this one) in early evening partly sinking beneath the surface of the water. The flower, which has around twenty petals, and the large almost circular leaves float on the surface of the water. The flower is also thought of as a symbol of purity.

Stunning shot Stuart, I love it. My mother once tried in a pond to pluck one...lol. She did not accomplish it as you are right the roots go down quite deep. Needless to say she got very wet.Warren Ballard 20 Jul 2008
