Portrait of Holman Gladenius

Oil on canvas signed and dated 1632. The frame probably from around 1880 with later coats of paint. The canvas size is 58 by 78 cm. Provenance from Hotel manager Peder Hilt and Fjellvikfjorden Local Museum 1992- 2005. Superb condition regarded the rather bizarre history of the painting. In the small local village museum of Fjellvikfjorden in Sogn, Norway, a painting by the local 1870´s national romantic, Osmund Quale, was donated from hotel manager Peder Hilts private collection. The artwork was temporarily stored in the office of the museum director Lenhart Grindholm awaiting a space in the permanent collection. At the same time, the museum was undergoing some serious redecoration work, and by accident one of the polish workers spilt a liter of white spirit over the old canvas. The local museum conservator was called up from his part time job as a tarmac worker on a road construction in the area. After some attempt to remove the white spirit, he got aware of the existence of a different painting under the top layer. His curious nature took completely over, and soon he had uncovered the Felix Fiigenschou painting presented here.
