"Shingle Beach" (2006, 10x14" watercolour) started its life at a "Do your own thing" night at my local art society. I couldn't think of anything to paint so I painted a sky. Something told me there should be sea, and then obviously you needed a beach. With that I sat for a while, then decided to put in a boat. I remembers breakwaters from being a kid at the seaside, so I was able to add one of those. I then needed some foreground, so the net was thrown in, and I finished the scene with a mass of pebbles, converting the sandy scene into a pebble beach. A colleague at work took to this piece as it reminded him of his father's home near on the south coast of England, and brought it during a sale in our local christmas fair for his father's christmas present. Unfortunately his father passed away before he could deliver it, but I believe it now hangs in his memory.

This is a lovely painting, Robert.........great to hear how it evolved and such a shame that your friends dad didn't get to see it.....it really does put me in mind of my childhood holidays at Weymouth on the South Coast. You've got a great eye for composition and I like the little details - the net in particular :o))Sharon Gonzalez 29 May 2008
