Pioneers

I'm moving on from my landscapes into something a little different. This was a composition for a competition at my local art society, the theme being "Flight". My idea started with a butterfly, gazing on as Da Vinci made his first sketches for powered flying machines, ironically with a feather quill. Years later, dandelions and birds watched on as the Wright Brothers made history at Kittyhawk; bring us up to the latter day is the newest and biggest passenger jet yet to be built, the Airbus A380, and the quest for flight finishes with Pioneer, leaving our uplifting atmosphere in search of skies new. The theme was lost on the judges, who gave the prizes to a Wellington Bomber and two Spitfires. But then, I was the youngest entrant by about 30 years! I like it anyway... Oil on Canvas, 18 x 24".
