The Genie of the Lamp

6 x 9 inches, watercolor and gouache, 2008 This was painted for the EBSQ "1001 Nights: Stories of Scheherazade" Show. It shows the genie of the lamp from the Aladdin story. Aladdin is tricked by a man he believes is his uncle but who is really a wicked magician, to enter a cave to retrieve a lamp for him. Aladdin is shut in the cave by the magician when he refuses to hand over the lamp but he escapes by using a magic ring the magician had given him. The genie of the lamp appears when his mother cleans the lamp and Aladdin uses the genie to gain himself riches and a beautiful palace and he marries the Emperors daughter. However, the magician returns and tricks the princess into giving him the lamp. He then gets the genie to transport the princess and the palace to his own country. Aladdin is able to use the genie of the magic ring to follow him and he and his wife trick the magician and poison him. They return to their own land with their palace and live happily ever after.
