Nona , Nono & Their kids - 1930, Libya

Yesterday, this photo was given to my Father, Aaron by his brother ,Refael. A Photo of my grandparents, Shalom & Yole Dabush z"l and 4 of their kids (from right to left ) Reuven, Lelio z"l, Vera z"l & Amos z"l. They brought into the world 8 kids, 2 died as very young kids, Lelio and Tamar z"l. My father Aaron, was their smallest kid, and my grandmother's favorite child :-), he was born to a 50 years old father, and a 40 years old mother, my grandparents. Shalom & Yole came both from very respectable families in Libya (Tripoli ). Shalom came from most significant family of Rabbis & Dayan (- a judge of a Jewish religious court ), became himself the main accountant, of a big company and an importer of Wines & products , such as fabrics and more from Europe. Yole came from a very rich family. Yole's parents send workers to help at home, in laundries, and other house works. Since they were very Zionists, they left ALL their HUGE property , And came to Israel in 1952. (Each of their kids came different year ) When they came to Israel they live in at first, at terrible conditions at the Maabarot . May the memory of those died, mentioned here, will be for blessing. I too "LOVE" old family pics.......I am the designated collector of all our family pics! Beautiful memories lie within each & everyone. I can see some resemblance of you in the little girl to the right......is she an Aunt....Right? Grand just GRAND !

Artist Reply: Hello Thom..I remember that you love and collect old photos, I scanned this photo..if you wish I can send it to you bigger size. The little girl, in this photo, was my aunt Vera, she died a young woman, about 50, I think (quite surprisingly ) . She left after her 4 wonderful kids, her smallest girl, name Sigalit, look absolutely like her...absolutely the same. Sigalit today is a beautiful tall woman, a mother herself, and I don't see today a real resemble to her. Thanks a lot, my dear friend...Good night to you, Nira

Artist Reply: Hello my dear Dee...The love for my homeland, I got first from my mother, who were born here, and had very strong love to this country. She truly in her words, which at times were very emotional educate to LOVE, our country, and it is for US, the place to live. But also as I wrote here, my father's family...were very zionists...and that's why they made "ALIA" Came to Israel (other part of his family stayed there, or went to Italy, because of properties, that they could not give away ). The musical side, was much stronger at my father's side. I definitely got " things " from both sides...outside and inside :-) Thanks for commenting...Have yourself a blessed life...LOVE & PRAYERS, for you and David..(((((((( HUGS )))))))), Nira

I love this portrait of your family ties...and the mention that your father? was an importer of fabrics at one time...hmmm. Yole is very beautiful and her nose is like yours...the haunting look on her face is deep and seriousi--I'm wondering why she looks to the left as Shalom looks straight ahead as does the older daughter..bq

Artist Reply: Hello Bobba..thanks for the visit and comments. My grandfather (not my father) was importer of wines fabrics and more products , especially from Italy, at the time ,the photo was taken and before he got married even. About their look, I believe this photo was directed by a professional photographer at that time... And I guess he gave them the directions of how to stand or look. To take portraits of children, and especially few together, to compose them well together is VERY DIFFICULT task...because they move a lot, especially at this ages... I personally don't wonder, about the why..I simply understand it was done, according to the direction and composing of the photographer. At my look there is from both side of my family, i'm very much mixture :-) Enjoy your day ,Nira

Steven Torrisi 16 Mar 2008

I agree with Hiromi I can see you in your grandmother. To wonder what they were thinking when this photo was taken. Did they look at (even older) photos of their grandparents and stare in amazement of youth and prosperity taken for posterity.

Artist Reply: Well, Steven as I said to Hiromi...Me does not see the resembles to my Nona, BUT..I very much see I look alike my brother Arie, who is very much like my father. I also know I got the Dabush nose and Dabush smile. As I wrote here before Steven, I think their look was directed by the photographer. They lived in great prosperity & honor in Libya, but after they came to Israel, they left ALL their properties and lived in bad conditions... and actually worked very hard to build part of this country. Life in Israel, the time they came was difficult for them...In the 60's my father wanted to emigrate to Canada, by the way..But my mother didn't agree. My grandparents were very modest and quiet people. Thanks so much..enjoy your day ,NIRA

I can see your likeness your elegant grandmother. It's fantastic to continue the blood to next life. I like to make a music video and I love to use old photos of my family before I was born. Nira, thanks for sharing the wonderful photo.

Artist Reply: Hello Hiromi, actually..I truly don't see likeness to my grandmother, but I know I took the Dabush nose :-)..and the Dabush smile as well, not can be seen on this photo though :-)...the smile I mean... It must have been the serious photographer , who directed the photo. The elegance came from both sides of my family.I also very much love old photos...Thanks so much
