©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- This Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) was sitting on a low-lying branch waiting for supper to meander by. Of the five subspecies of Red- shouldered Hawk, the one found here in Florida is the palest in color. The Great Horned Owl is often the nemisis of this hawk. They each will take the others’ nestlings for food. It may sound a little gross, but the way to find these hawks’ nests, is to look on the ground for their feces. By the time a nestling is five days old, it can shoot its poop ovr the edge of the nest. Good housekeeping, I guess. Photographed in Lake County, Florida.
