Red-shouldered Hawk

©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- This Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) was sitting on a low-lying branch waiting for supper to meander by. Of the five subspecies of Red- shouldered Hawk, the one found here in Florida is the palest in color. The Great Horned Owl is often the nemisis of this hawk. They each will take the others’ nestlings for food. It may sound a little gross, but the way to find these hawks’ nests, is to look on the ground for their feces. By the time a nestling is five days old, it can shoot its poop ovr the edge of the nest. Good housekeeping, I guess. Photographed in Lake County, Florida.

CAN YOU BELIEVE? I HAD ONE YESTERDAY, AND TODAY YOU HAVE ONE!!! ISN'T FLORIDA GREAT FOR BIRDS!!!!!

Artist Reply: Thanks for the kind comment on my Red-shouldered Hawk image. Yes, Florida is great for bird watching and photographing. I chose the house I now live in just because of the pond out back because I knew it would be a bird-magnet, and I was right.

Amazing shot, what camera are you using and what lense?

Artist Reply: Thanks for the kind comment on my Red-shouldered Hawk image. You asked about my camera and lens. I use a Canon Rebel xti with a Canon 70-200L lens. I would dearly love to have a longer lens for my birds, but the budget says "do with what you got."
