Grand Island East Light

This is the Grand Island East Light, in Michigan`s UP. I took the picture from the deck of a tour boat. The Light was built in 1868 and was taken out of service in 1913 after the Munising Range Lights were built. It doesn`t have a single trace of it`s original paint, and is s lonely site. At some point, I hope to upload a painting of this building, but it will take some time. I have always loved to paint old buildings and barns and such, but every one I ever did was either sold or given to one of my 4 adult children.

The Glow and Bright colors You've captured is incredible, really brings this to Life!

Artist Reply: Thank you, John. The building has been restored since I snapped that photo. I need to go back and take another one.

Fantastic, Joan! Oh, if only those walls could talk! Lighthouses are always so intriguing & this one really should be saved!

Artist Reply: You are right, it should be saved. I am really surprised that it hasn`t been restored.
Artist Reply: Dianne, this is an update on my response to your March 4 comment. I am doing an oil painting of this lighthouse, and needed more photos of it than I have. I want my painting to have the Lake Superior shore showing just slightly and went online to see if there were any pictures of it showing the lake front. I found several, and in the course of looking, I discovered that since I was there it has undergone some restoration. The foundation has been reinforced, and the building and light tower have been reinforced with a series of cables and wires, and t he outside painted a weathered brown or grey. Also there is now a protective "crib" between the building and the lake. My painting is of the unrestored light. I think the weathered old building has more character than the spruced up one. But at least the new version will not fall down. Thought you might like to know. ~~Joan

A really nice architectural work!

Artist Reply: Yes, it really is nice, and I think it`s a shame that it hasn`t really been taken care of or restored as many of the old light houses were.
