This painting is of Fisherman's Wharf just prior to the outbreak of WWII. It was not the bright tourist attraction it is today, but a relatively drab working wharf that possessed a rough charm all its own. This whole part of the Wharf seemed to be devoted exclusively to crab fishermen as can be seen by the sign of the Crab Fisherman's Protective Association. Steamed crabs are still sold along the pier in the exact same spot they are sold today. Thankfully, some things will never change.
