©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) Native to Europe and Asia, they were first introduced into North America as a decorative waterfowl for parks and zoos. By the early 1900’s, a number had escaped into the wild and Mute Swans can now be found from New England south to Florida. Although their name is “Mute” Swan, they are not mute, but their calls are quiet and do not carry very far. Despite their beauty and graceful appeal, they are a very aggressive bird. Photographed in Polk County, Florida.

Dolores, this is a BEAUTIFUL shot of this swan. My mom lives on a houseboat near AMSTERDAM (the Netherlands) and there are a lot of swans surrounding her boat. Not always fun since they're extremely defensive...Emily Reed 22 Jan 2008
