Stone Temple Dancers

Stone Temple Dancers, Acrylic on High quality cotton canvas 59" x 59", 2007. I dedicated a long time to create this painting and completed it over the course of about a year. It was inspired by the stone carvings of Apsaras, celestial angels, which line the walls of the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. You can see over 2000 Apsaras on the temple walls in Angkor and each one has her own unique quality and energy. The origin of this character is from the Hindu religion but since then the Apsara has become recognizable with the classical dancer of the Khmer Court and her grace and beauty. The Apsara character is the most recognizable in Cambodian history and Dance. The graceful movements and mudras (hand gestures) are intricate and symbolic to the Khmer History.Due to the large size and monochrome pallette of this piece it is hard to photograph well, please contact me for more detailed pictures.
