Maya

My friend Lynne, a Japanese hair stylist and consultant for home decor lives in a cozy and magical condo that reflects her character, spiritual life as a Buddhist and a passionate dog lover. I love to visit Maya, her Min Pin/ Chihuahua mix. They are inseparable and just returned from a year where Lynne was working as a hair stylist at the Hotel Hana Maui. Opened in 1947. etched into the wild undulating hills on Maui's fertile east coast in Hana, Hawaii, this ranch-style property is located on 66 tropical acres and overlooks Hana Bay on the eastern side of Maui's Haleakala Mountain. Hana’s Cultural Center is one block from the hotel while the Red Sand Beach is one-half mile away. Since Charlie and I took Kevin to Hawaii for several vacations when he was a young boy, we had the pleasure of staying at this spiritual paradise often known for where the Beatle George Harrison spent much of his time after the Beatles disbanded. One of the challenges of visiting this exquisite property is the road to Hana, a drive considered as one of the top 10 most beautiful drives in North America. There are tee shirts along the winding road that state, “I survived the Hana Highway.” If you are not prone to nausea and prefer to struggle with your bowels and bladder along the route, it is a most challenging experience. There are a few pit stops of welcome relief if you consider nature as a restroom. I say this because the drive is highly recommended to Maui tourists as the area is considered to be the essence of Maui. I wanted to give you fair warning since survival is an issue despite enthusiastic recommendations from those who have no problem with vertigo, queasy stomachs or problems with bladder control. There is the option of taking depends as you navigate winding roads for 52 miles that can take from two hours to three depending on how often you stop. The famed highway begins when you leave the town of Pa'ia on hwy. 36. During your drive you cross over 66 one-land bridges. Although the drive may take several hours, it seems like a lifetime as you wind around narrow curves hoping to enjoy the lush scenery all along the road. There are many scenic places to stop and view waterfalls, mini cascades, eucalyptus groves, and bamboo jungles. There are a few roadside fruit stands to stop and stretch your legs. Maya, one of Molly’s dear friends enjoyed the adventure. Although she has a rather alarmed look on her precious face now that she is back in Los Angeles she enjoys lounging on this beautiful couch that matches her eyes. She has no signs of suffering from vertigo and told Molly it was difficult with her advancing age to sit in the shade for five hours reading a book and is glad to be back home.
