Stop On By - Chaka Khan I

When and if you speak of a "real deal," as far as entertainers, this woman is certainly one, as far as I'm concerned. She may be older, and have increased volumptuousness, but my favorite rememberance of her is from many moons ago. I had predicted that she was going to unseat Aretha Franklin from her throne, as the queen of soul. Of course she didn't, but she didn't need to. Over time, Chaka entered solo fame (without the band RUFUS)and ventered, some say into the world of pop music, which to me, ran neck in neck with "new recatoegorized" R&B. She was a phenomenal performer in and of herself. She could most assuredly have put most of the new female entertainers to shame, as far as that goes. I saw her with Rufus, and was totally transfixed by the power that was in her voice, and charisma on stage. My decision to stop trying to sing in a singing group, was encouraged by that Rufus, featuring Chaka Khan performance. Near Bohemian in her thinking, and sense of style, even today. She had the biggest hair I had ever seen, she danced in the original hip-hugger pants with her stretch marks showing, as she had given birth, and was proud of them. Still shapely, with an unforgiving performance of fully energized awareness of who she was, and how she wanted to come across to the audience. Always, the wider than wide smile. I will be doing a few more drawings of her over time.

I agree with mark. Carliss, you are always right on with your lights and darks. You work appears to come easy for you to me. You do have the grace of the pencil.

Artist Reply: Penny, the pencils were my first love so I guess that's why it's easier for me to render with them. Although at times, I could scream because something isn't taking the shape I would prefer. Always learning, and always practicing. The ease is hard won. Thank you greatly, dear Penny!!

Mark Peterson 24 Jun 2007

I like all the lines you got going on here, and the lights and darks in the hair. Has a ruffness to it that is appealing...Nice work Carliss!

Artist Reply: Mark, thanks so much! Every now, and then, I like doing rough drawings. Always smooth, to me is boring, and I'm glad you find it appealing

annette steens 24 Jun 2007
