Few people besides his challengers got to see what ferocity Ketchel had on his face inside the ring. Papke never believed Ketchel was a better boxer than he was, and they fought four times. Papke won one bout, and that was after he punched ketchel in the throat and head, instead of shaking hands at the beginning of the fight. The next time they fought after Ketchel's loss, Ketchel told Papke he wasn't going to close up his eyes until near the end, because he wanted Papke to be able to see who was going to take him out. Something like that. At any rate, Papke went home to his mother, and when she saw how he looked after the outcome of the fight, his mother fainted. Ketchel had won again.
