TELEVISION... The time killer

This painting was executed in 1989... painted on six primered 8ft. X 4 4t. panels (24ft. wide) It was first exhibited in the Los Angeles founding Pico House gallery.. located next to the oldest firestation in Olvera Street Plaza, downtown. This social commentary was named "Wasted Future". To this very day, it is noted that the average American household, even with computer commitments, watches between 4.5 to 8.5 hours of television a day. Children are being formed and fashioned by the displayed media information, documentaries and portrayed platonic perspectives of "real life"... This painting was done in all aerosol spray enamels shot through european wide and handcarved skinny caps I had invented as a teenager. The message was clear. A huge interior room with children from various cultures and international origins... watching innocent television. The walls are dilapidating and cracking due to a war going on outside. The window displays a series of bombs being dropped by enemy warplanes, yet the noise and reality are completely being flushed out and overridden by the TV set world in which they are engaged (talk about attention deficit disorder). the TV set is feeding them whatsoever fantasy they want or desire. There is a TV Guide on the floor with a crude image of a nude woman... which really does not matter anyway, there are no moralistic parents around . The hidden side of this Tevilision set is unplugging itself from the wall because it is now joyfully feeding and surviving off of their souls and precious time. The Los Angeles Herald Examinar displayed this painting in a half page front cover editorial of its publication, The LA Times and other local newspapers were involved also. People to this day, know where the balance is drawn in their own worship, attention or adoration of this plasma screen. Fifteen years ago, I decided to completely stop watching it altogether.. to this day it is still gone from my habitat. because of this, my family has so many genuine adventures and wonderful experiences, we meet so many people, visit museums, gardens, schools, beaches, mountains, parks etc. The Bible has basic principles that somehow apply directly to this painting. Psalms 101:3,6, Job 31:1, Romans 12:1-2, 2 Corinthians 7:1, 2 Timothy 2:19-20, Dueteronomy 7:26... Uhhh, Mr Rios, what about the History Channel? What about the nature stations? What about the news? Do you live in a cave?...... Truthfully, we get so much more unfiltered and time tested information, pleasure and education, visiting libraries, spending time and chronicling in Natural History, Cultural, Music, Presidential, Aeronautical, Oceanography, Transportation, or Creative Arts Museums. We derive much better concepts and visualization of current, passing or ancient events by reading the newspaper, editorials and books... and there are no tacky commercials either, wow. It is also much healthier walking, laughing, interacting, discovering and enjoying eachother..... Time is precious... and it is traveling rather rapidly. Think...................* H Rios - (213)435-9611
