This 'hoop' was the 'basket' in ancient Mayan sport where the goal was to get a ball through this hoop about 25 feet in the air without using your hands. The spectators sat on top of the wall. There was another hoop strait across from this one on an opposing wall. The captain from the winning team was sacraficed as an honor.
