OK, the Carbon River Rd. is toast for the time being. Just because we can't get there this winter doesn't mean that you can't see photos from winters past. Like I have said before we attempt this hike at least 6 times a year, but many times we are turned back due to little things like rockslides, avalanches, or many trees that decide to slide down or are blown down the steep sides of this valley. On this trip in Nov. 2005, my daughter stopped suddenly in mid-sentence and I nearly ran over her. There was a landslide blocking the trail, and being that it was fresh and the ground soft and wet, we decided this would be a good time to turn around. We marveled at the size of this big rock and were glad that it didn't come down while we were crossing this stretch of trail. The second photo was taken in Mar. of 2006, 5 months later. By this time the trail had been rerouted by a few brave souls and we got to see how really big that rock was. Beleive me, it wasn't very easy to negotiate this in 1 1/2 ft. of snow. You can't tell what is underneath...I let her go first... :)
