The Hells of Lupus (edited)

*** Thank you for the Picture of the day on 12/16/06!!!***

Hi All,
I have sadly now posted an edited version of this picture. The original of this picture was removed (by a mod), as well as the wonderful & supporting comments I received.

At this point, I am going to stand on my soapbox and make my comments. I am a paying member of this site. I do know the rules for this site; though I do completely disagree with one particular one. I do not see the problem with tasteful nudity of a human form (male or female). I do believe it is art and should be appreciated as such! The nudity within this picture was needed to get my point across. It DID NOT contain any nipples or details of the lower part of her body! We all have a butt crack and yes there is a little part of this in my picture, it just showed the correct human form; where the back meets the top of the legs, nothing more. On a daily basis we see more butt crack (hairy) from men bending over and their pants coming down than what was in this picture. This picture is a third-quarter view of a woman (me) and Goddess forbid we even hint at a breast.

I realize that this is a family site and children may view this picture. First of all, if you don't want your child to see, don't show them. Secondly, I have five kids (all boys), myself and they have all seen this piece and it is hanging on our wall. They do not oogle it and say 'oooooh a nude woman'; they say 'oooow mom was hurting when she drew this' and move on. They also added suggestions for shading (along with my other nude pictures). So, all of the prudes who have a free site membership here or are just visiting, you need to just move pass this particular picture of mine and then we don't have anything to worry about. Most if not all museums have at least one nude piece of artwork hanging up, this is no different. You look at the ones which interest you or move on. Most all of the great artists of the past, used nudity in some of their works and now people buy them for millions.

To Artwanted, you guys need to add another category for nude artwork for paying members. I know I can't put all of my artwork on here because of the rule and I do have a problem with this. I know there are other artists on this site who are having the same problem. If a subcategory within our portfolio is added for nudes, then artwork with nudity can still be viewed, but who views it can be better controlled. A sub-folder labeled nudity with no picture on the front can be added and then the viewer can make a decision. As it stands, the lack of being able to add nude artwork, is a form of censureship and is just wrong.

To all who have been supportive of my artwork, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart. Goddess bless!

Now, to the description of this picture. This is a picture done during a major lupus flare-up. The big metal nails and ripped open skin represents the burning and sharp pains in my joints and other parts of my body. The nudity represented the feeling of being alone and exposed to the elements of hell. The 'Last Will' represents the wanting to die to be rid of the pain completely. The vines or tenticles and chains represent being pulled into all direction and being held down to avoid escape. The new red cloth represents violence and pain and this is why I left it in color rather than making it b & w to fit the rest of the picture. I wanted it to stand out.

This is not a picture of just torturing a woman, there is meaning, it is me and my life. I hope everyone can on some level relate (as empathy, not actually going through such pain:). I will be building my own website in the near future and the original will be posted.

Thank you for visiting my site and this picture.

Sincerely,
Valarie

P.S. Sorry this is so long and thank you for reading it!Thank you sooo... much for the support!

Wonderful work and great statement how about a response from the Artwanted team to these comments ?!We know the rules but just like adding new art mediums can't we find a happy medium?Pun fully intended!

Artist Reply: Thank you for the wonderful comments. I can't agree with you more about ArtWanted responding to my comments. I did verbalize a happy medium, but never heard a response back.

Great emotional portrayal in this image Valarie.. very nicely done.. I couldn't agree more with your text.. I guess they're entitled to remove whatever they want, it's their site, but I feel sad that they appear to only be capeable of seeing sexuality in nudity.. I see you're thinking about setting up a site of your own... I did the same when AW started to remove my Pallette Series.. I found Microsoft's *Free* Office Live Site easy to work with.. There's a link in my Pallette Series folder if you'd like to see how it looks.. Seasons Greetings to You and Yours..:-)

Artist Reply: Thank you for your wonderful and supportive comments, I truly appreciate them! I will be checking out you site. Thank you for the information!

Such intense painful imagery, as someone who knows nothing about lupus (and judging from the pain expressed, I never want to) I'd say you portrayed yourself very clearly. To whoever complained about the nudity, how narrow minded can they be? Congrats on the top ten.

Artist Reply: Thank you, Wayne for your wonderful and supportive comments! I truly appreciate them!! I am glad that you understand and on some level felt the pain. I have to ask, what do you mean about the Top 10 ("Congrats on the top ten.")? It is sad how narrow-minded people can people. I do full heartly believe this is one of the major problems with this country and world!

Some people just should refrain from commenting. Have you noticed that it is always the one hiding under the "anonymous" that leave the stupid comments? ....Beautiful image and fantastic pencil work Valarie

Artist Reply: Thank you for the wonderful comments! I total agree with you about the stupid comments and that some people should reframe from leaving comments.

First of all, this is an incredible rendering of both the physical realities and the emotional responses behind lupus. Second, a little bit of my own soapbox. Hope you don't mind. :) There is a distinct difference between nudity and pornography. It is unfortunate that some people do not see this. There is no more beautiful form in this world than the human form as it was designed ~ in the nude. What would the art world be without contributions such as Michaelangelo's David? ...or indeed, the Thinker? It is only those who have no appreciation of their own humanity who have no appreciation for the human form in art. I, too, regret not being able to see this in it's original form. There is no place for censorship in the art world. If you're compiling a list of people to inform when your site is built, please put me on it. Blessings, Valarie. May the Goddess be with you.

Artist Reply: Thank you so much for your wonderfull soapbox comments. I absolutely 100% agree with you!!!! Also, thank you for the wonderful comments about the picture. I am glad you got it! ;) When I do have a website in the future I will make sure to add you to the list. :)
Artist Reply: THANK YOU!!

Management and half of the members voted NO NUDES!!!!!!!! You and others desire to force your porn or dirty pictures on others! If you dont like the rules post your nudes elsewhere.

Artist Reply: Well, you are obviously one of those prudes who shower with your clothes on because you get so uptight over looking at skin, even your own. Had you read my comments closer you would have read that I stated they needed to add a secure area to the site for nudes. If you don't like it don't look at it. I guess you are one of those who wouldn't know art if it came up and bit you. This is not porn nor is it dirty and how is it pushing it onto others, if others (like you) make the decision to look. You clicked on my picture of your own free will. It is people like you trying to push your beliefs onto others; Goddess bless if we decide to push back. Oh and obviously you don't have the nerve to sign in under your real name, what are you afraid of? Get a life P.S I guess you would think the famous statue "The Thinker" is pornography...
