Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Indian Turnip)is found in moist shady woodlands. The flowers are hidden in the pulpit or spathe but in the fall, when the spathe has withered, the fruit is conspicuous, and egg-shaped cluster of red berries. The tuber contains starch but also has a very sharp taste due to crystals of calcium oxalate.Done in Watercolors by Merilyn Carpenter 7/21/06
