this drawing is based on some photos i took of the giant bronze buddha statue in kamakura, japan, in 1985... the statue was built about 750 years ago, and was kept inside a large temple for over 200 years until the building was swept away by a giant tsunami wave at the end of the 15th century... the buddha survived and has been sitting outside in the open air ever since.... i'm not sure what the background symbolizes except i wanted to emphasize a kind of cellular level self-weaving process... perhaps a nod to the buddhist and taoist idea of "mutual arising" - similar to the systems concept of "self construction"... the idea that the universe is creating itself, kind of like how an embryo will grow itself, how each and every one of us have created our own bodies from scratch, with just the guidance of our parents' dna... which i have always thought is incredibly mysterious and pretty darn cool... :)
